Jaarlikse Sakeliga / Annual Business League

Monday, 10 December 2018 12:42

Business League

The Business League is one of the club's primary fundraising opportunities in the summer months. These are tournaments intended for non-club members, who are invited twice a year over four consecutive Wednesday evenings in November and February. During these months the weather is generally favorable for bowls and there are enough daylight hours to complete the required number of games. Only one green is currently equipped with spotlights so speed of play is necessary.

Due to the early play and because many of the teams are from businesses in the area, the tournament is known as either the Evening League. Many of the teams are very often groups of good friends and even family. Teams like Bollerol, Bossies, The Favorites, Van Der Stel and Wille Honne have been playing for 10 years and more in these tournaments and have made valuable contributions to our club over this time.

Men and women, often in mixed teams, consist of four people and the maximum teams that can enter are 28. The club provides two bowls per player for those who do not have. Players arrive at any time from 16:30 and play starts at 17:30. 14 heads are completed per evening and each game lasts approximately 2 hours. For the first night, teams are drawn to play against each other and in the next three evenings, strength is played against strength based on the leading sides from each evening’s play, to ultimately determine a winning team on the last play night.

Even though the participants are not regular lawn bowl players, good skills are evident and the teams are very competitive. A winner’s trophy is at stake as well as prizes for players of the winning teams, many of which are donated by participating companies and individuals.

Good "rock" and "pop" music is played throughout the evenings play. The bar is open throughout play and drinks can be taken to the greens. After play, a full meal is served and the players mingle in a relaxed atmosphere.

The tournaments are extremely popular and the club's biggest challenge is to accommodate all those teams who want to enter.
